What is 4-H?

4-H is the world's largest, most dynamic informal educational program. Individual members select their own program to pursue, set goals, keep records and share their skills with others when the project is complete.

Who is 4-H?

The 4-H motto is "TO MAKE THE BEST BETTER". This means that 4-Hers want:

  • TO BECOME COMPETENT to meet the challenge of tomorrow,
  • TO COPE with the problems of today, and
  • TO CONTRIBUTE to the world around them.
4-Hers benefit from learning positive life skills in a healthy, stimulating environment. Direct personal benefits may include:
  • Learning to make decisions, set and achieve goals.
  • Exploring individual interests.
  • Learning to work both independently and in groups.
  • Learning to relate to others.
  • Learning to share what you have learned.
  • Having fun while learning.
  • Strengthening the family.
  • Developing leadership skills.
  • Becoming a better citizen.
  • Building a strong self-image.

You can join 4-H by asking a friend who belongs to a club for information on local clubs. You can also contact the 4-H Office at (831) 637-5346 for more information. Only Kindergartners through age 19 may join 4-H. Children in kindergarten through third grade are designated as Primary Members, or "Mini Members". Primary members can enroll in most projects, including small animals. Members MUST be in 4th Grade or be 9 years or older to be eligible for large livestock (such as sheep, goats, pigs and cattle). Enrollment time generally starts in June, but some clubs will make exceptions.
